Autorenrichtlinien

Die deutsche Version der Autorenrichtlinien wird demnächst hier aufgeschaltet.

Submission of a paper to the Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry is understood to imply that the data contained there in has not previously been published (except in abstract form) or is being considered for publication elsewhere. The papers may be written in German, French or English.

The guidelines for authors are based on the guidelines published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (Uniform Requirements: see www.icmje.org).

General issues

Authorship / redundant or duplicate publication / financial support

Authorship credit should be based only on (1) substantial contributions to conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; (2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and (3) final approval of the version to be published. Conditions 1, 2, and 3 must all be met. Acquisition of funding, the collection of data, or general supervision of the research group, by themselves, do not justify authorship, nor does the fact of being in sole charge of the clinic or department in which the article was prepared. Such contributions should be listed as acknowledgements. In view of these requirements, more than six authors will be listed only in exceptional cases.
All authors must sign the “Author's form”. Authors will be asked to submit the author's forms during the reviewing process. By their signature the authors will also have to certify that neither this manuscript, nor any other with substantially similar content by one or more of the same authors, has been published, accepted or is currently being assessed by another journal with a view to publication. Publications partly duplicating material in the submitted paper should be enclosed during the submission process.
Outside financial support or other financial or personal relationships in connection with the submitted manuscript should be indicated in the author's form and in a footnote on the title page of the manuscript.

Obligation to register clinical trials

We encourage the registration of all interventional trials, whether early or late phase, in a primary register that participates in WHO's International Clinical Trial Registry Platform (http://www.who.int/ictrp/en/index.html). The registry must be independent of for-profit interest. Authors will be asked to include the trial registration number and the name of the trial registry during the online submission process.

Ethics

Human and animal studies require approval by ethics committees. When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate in the “Methods” section whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional) and with the Helsinki Declaration.

Protection of patients’ rights to privacy

Patients have a right to privacy that should not be infringed without informed consent. Identifying information, including patients’ names, initials, or hospital numbers, should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that a patient who is identifiable be shown the manuscript to be published. Identifying details should be omitted if they are not essential. Complete anonymity is difficult to achieve, however, and informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt. For example, masking the eye region in photographs of patients is inadequate protection of anonymity. Authors should disclose to these patients that the material will be available via the Internet after publication. An informed consent form may be obtained from the publisher.

The papers may be written in German, French or English. The complete manuscript must be submitted to the publisher in electronic form.

Abbreviations

Customary abbreviations (e.g. ACTH, ECG) are permitted. All other abbreviations should be used sparingly and an alphabetic list of abbreviations with explanations should be supplied. Abbreviations that are used only once should be avoided. Always use SI units. Results in other units may be added in parentheses.

Tables and figures

Tables and figures should be commented upon in the text and their position marked at the appropriate point. In the case of figures and tables from other publications, the source must be stated and copyright agreements provided. Lengthy tables should be avoided. Tables should be provided with captions, numbered consecutively and each reproduced on a separate page of the manuscript (not as a separate file!).

Figures should each be submitted with a legend on a separate manuscript page. Captions should be formulated so as to allow the figure to be understood without reference to the text. All abbreviations employed should be explained in the caption if not already included in the list of abbreviations. The figure should be imported using the jpeg format or tif (300 lpi) or eps format not exceeding a file size of 2 MB. With critical material we may request higher resolution illustrations during the review process. Upon acceptance of a manuscript we will negotiate with the authors the final submission of figures and photographs, either as high resolution files or glossy prints or slides. Colour illustrations are accepted at no extra page charge.

If a figure or a table has been published before, the original source should be acknowledged accompanied by written permission from the copyright holder for reproduction of the material.

References

The list of references should be arranged and numbered in order of appearance in the text, not alphabetically. The appropriate number should be inserted in brackets [ ] in the text. The full titles of the quoted publications should be listed. List the first six authors followed by “et al.”. Examples:
